Sunday, October 13 - Nature + Spirituality 4pm Squaxin Park, Shelter #2
52% of adults, both religiously affiliated and unaffiliated (Nones), spend time in nature to connect with “something bigger than themselves.” Eco-feminist Theologian, Sally McFague writes, “the universe as God’s body is a rich, suggestive way to radicalize the glory, the awesomeness, the beyond-all-imagination power and mystery of God …we are invited to see the creator in the creation, the source of all existence in and through what is bodied forth from that source.” On the second Sunday of the month we will gather outside with poetry, story, an invitation for reflection or mediation and a nature walk. Encountering the Holy in creation.
This month we will be at Squaxin Park (formerly Priest Point Park) at picnic shelter #2. We’ll be under a covered picnic shelter but dress for the weather.
Thursday, October 17 - Sacred Story: Poetry as Sacred Text, 7:30 pm
United Churches Library, Call Us What We Carry by Amanda Gorman
Lectio-divina is a monastic practice of spiritual reading, using a section of biblical text as meditation or prayer. Traditionally, Lectio Divina has four separate steps: read; meditate; pray; contemplate. It is not focused on theological analysis or interpretation, instead immersing in the words allowing the spirit to guide the reading. We will use the same format to read and explore poetry. For October we’ll read Amanda Gorman’s collection, Call us What we Carry. Read as much or as little of the book as you like, share your favorite poems and we’ll read, meditate, pray, contemplate together.
Email me for a copy of the book! (yay free book!) I’d consider doing this as a blended, in-person and on Zoom gathering, if there was interest. LMK!
Tuesday, October 22 - Interfaith Blessing of the Ballots 5:30 pm
outside of the Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd.
Voting is a spiritual practice and while systems of power will never truly save us, voting is a tool for living into our faith values. Bring your ballot to drop in the ballot drop box or register to vote!
Sunday, October 27 - Ex Nihilo: Creating from Chaos (All-ages), 2 pm
United Churches Chapel (Notice the different time!)
Ex nihilio, latin for “out of nothing,” is the belief that God created the world from the chaotic nothingness of the cosmos. We create ex nihilo too, co-creating from Holy chaos and wonder. Together we’ll use art, creativity, and chaos as spiritual practice. This is all-ages with an intentional centering of kiddo’s spirituality.
